Over the summer I read The Dark Is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper, and I loved it. I'm so jealous of kids that read them when they were younger, because it was so well crafted and subtle and had awesome characters (for the most part).

My absolute favorite was Will Stanton, one of the heroes and who was one of the most understated tragic characters I've run across. My heart broke every couple pages for him, but he just kept going on his quest. Ahhhhh they were so good.

EXCEPT FOR THE ENDING seriously I mentally white-outed that ending sofast. Sorry Susan Cooper, but I had to!

I intend to do another drawing/painting with Will and his BFF (literally foreverrrr Susan Cooper!) Bran, but I intend to do a lot of things. I hope you enjoy it!

You might be interested to know that the Audiobooks of the dark is rising are some of the best there are. Actually I prefer them, The narrator for all of them does it perfectly, and when in the grey king they get a actual welshman to read it I always end up thinking with that accent for weeks on end.

Ooh! I've never seen DiR fanart before. This is a nice treat. ^^

Don't envy kids who read it as kids - we were waaaay too young to understand what we had. I go back and read all my childhood favorites, and oh man. When you're a kid you take the story at face value. "Magical battle between good and evil, a wierd ghost with antlers, cool!" I think the subtlety and richness of the best children's literature is really there for adult readers to enjoy. ^^
